An investigation is underway after human skeletal remains were found Thursday afternoon in a remote area of Marion County, deputies said.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office received a call for service around 3:30 p.m. The remains were found by three fishermen at a remote location between the 6300th and 6500th block of Southeast 149th Court Road in Ocklawaha.

The bones were located adjacent to an unnamed lake and were visible from a walking/travel path surrounding the lake, deputies said.

Marion County Sheriff’s Office detectives and evidence technicians responded to process the scene.

Detectives will be conducting a join investigation with the Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the gender, identity and cause/manner of death.

No other information was released.

The last missing person's case in Ocklawaha was in February 2014 when 48-year-old John Radabaugh Jr., who has the mental capacity of a 3-year-old, wandered off from his home less than 10 miles away from Thursday's scene.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office called off the search for Radabaugh about a week after he was seen.
