Thousands of runners tried to burn some calories in downtown Orlando this morning before they dive into the turkey and trimmings.

The 26th annual Turkey Trout took place at Lake Eola.

More than 5,000 participants laced up their shoes for the 5K race.

Thanksgiving is actually the most popular holiday across the United States to compete in an organized run/walk event.

The Calorie Control Council said the average American consumes more than 4,500 calories and 229 grams of fat on Thanksgiving.

A 5-kilometer run might not burn all of those calories, but it will probably help a little bit.

Last year, the Turkey Trot helped raise $207,000 for Seniors First. The goal is to raise more money at this year's event.

Seniors First assists elderly people in the Central Florida community by providing services, like Meals on Wheels.

"Home is where everybody wants to be for as long as they can, and it is seniors who've given to the community over the years, so we want to support them in the way they would like to be supported to be able to stay at home," said Cathy Edwards, chief operating officer at Seniors First.

There was also a costume contest and a turkey-calling competition at the event.
