A Deltona man who deputies said went through a lot of trouble late Wednesday night to get his hands on extra cash now faces a couple of charges.

Brian McCoy, 27, was arrested and charged with one count of robbery and one count of burglary.

Deputies said the mini crime spree began shortly before 10:30 p.m. at a Burger King on Sunrise Boulevard in DeBary. A motorist rolled up to the drive-thru lane and ordered two cheeseburgers and some fries. But when he got to the window, the man declared that it was a robbery and ordered the employee to hand over the money from the cash register.

The robbery attempt, however, was quickly and easily foiled when the restaurant manager working the drive-thru window refused the man's demands and closed the window, deputies said.

The suspect drove off and headed east on Dirksen Drive toward Deltona.

The attempted robbery at the Burger King was reported to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office at 10:27 p.m.

About 10 minutes later, a man fitting the same description robbed a Circle K store on Deltona Boulevard, which is about 1.5 miles away from the Burger King.

According to deputies, the suspect managed to get away with some money. But he also was recognized by one of the store clerks, who initially though the man was joking when he came to the counter with a 12-pack of beer and then said, "I'm so sorry to do this on Thanksgiving, but I need all the money in your register," deputies said.

The clerk told deputies she was fearful for her safety and said the suspect looked like he was high on drugs. She complied with his demands and handed over about $87 from the cash register. The man took the cash and beer and then fled the store.

During the course of the investigation, deputies actually spoke to McCoy over the phone, and he said he wanted to surrender. He then called deputies back around 2:30 a.m. Thursday to report that he was in a grocery store parking lot in Sanford.

Seminole County deputies picked up McCoy and transported him to the John E. Polk Correctional Facility, where he was being held without bond.
