A new report shows a decline in violent crimes in Brevard County.

A report released this week by the FBI and Florida Department of Law Enforcement shows a nearly 7 percent decrease during the first six months of 2015.

Violent crimes include: murder, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault.

Community leaders are pleased with the crime drop, but say more can be done.

"The crime is really tough out here," said resident Charles Smith.

Smith has lived in Brevard County for 15 years and he has witnessed his fair share of violence.

He said one way to help curb the bloodshed is to help children in one of the most dangerous areas in Titusville called Deleon. Smith said leaders should turn vacant buildings into places for the youth.

“We need help out here. We got too many kids that are running around not knowing what their true identity is,” said Smith.

According to the statistics, the violent crime rate in Brevard County has declined for the last three years.

The Brevard County Sheriff's Office attributes the decline to its community presentations and special events. Its social media page reaches on average 800,000 people per month. There are also weekly crime prevention tips and public service announcements posted on the agency's Facebook page.
