A Lady Lake man has been arrested in connection with a deadly shooting of a 25-year-old man over the weekend, deputies said Wednesday.

Michael Cates, 48, of Lady Lake, has been charged with second-degree murder. He was arrested Tuesday night and taken to the Lake County Detention Center, where he was booked with a $50,000 bond. He has since been released after posting the bond, according to the jail website.

According to investigators, Jeremy Yelton was walking just before midnight along Griffin View Drive when he came into contact with an acquaintance.

Investigators said Cates, after learning that his stepdaughter had just been battered by Yelton that same night, found him walking along the roadway.

Cates, according to investigators, pulled his vehicle over and confronted Yelton with a baseball bat. Yelton then tackled Cates, and a struggle ensued between the two men.

During the struggle, Cates used a handgun he was carrying to shoot Yelton, who died at the scene, investigators said.

Cates also suffered a minor gunshot wound during the shooting.

No other information has been released.
