If you’re traveling in Florida for the holidays this week, you won’t have to deal with construction crews at work on the roads.

The Florida Department of Transportation said major roadwork will stop early Wednesday morning through Sunday.

In some spots, work may resume late Sunday night after 10 p.m.

FDOT says that although construction work will stop, the construction zones themselves will remain. That means drivers should obey speed limits, stay alert and drive safely.

The latest traffic information can be found on the FDOT District 5 website.

In the Tampa Bay area, no interstates will be closed in Tampa or St. Petersburg. In addition, no closures are scheduled in Hernando, Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties.

In Osceola County, FDOT has two construction projects. One widens John Young Parkway between Portage Street and Vine Street from four to six lanes. Another project widens U.S. 192 from Eastern Avenue to Nova Road in St. Cloud.

Construction just started this month but businesses in the area say they’re already feeling the effects.

“There’s been some impact, I think it’s turning people away. But the construction company seems to be good about maintaining access,” said Richard Roth with St. Cloud Auto Salvage.

"All those roadways down in Osceola County, there’s a lot of congestion down there, a lot of traffic because of the growth that has occurred in Osceola County," said Steve Olson with FDOT. "Kissimmee and St. Cloud are kind of the linchpins in the county, where a lot of state roads come together.”

According to FDOT the project is meant to better traffic flow. Residents say the process to get there is something they’re not looking forward to.

“It may free up traffic a little bit in the afternoons," Roth said. "Certainly it’s a popular thoroughfare and any improvement would be welcome.”
