Get in line. Buy a ticket. And then climb aboard.

"Merry Christmas!" passengers shout at unsuspecting pedestrians walking along St. Augustine's sidewalks.

It's not a toboggan, but it's a tram through St. Augustine as the Nation's Oldest City celebrates its 450th anniversary in a warm glow.

"The reason we put up white lights is because St. Augustine was originally a Spanish city, and around the holiday season, the Spanish would put candles in their windows, and candle flames are always white," said Amanda Pinkerton, a historian. "So, that is why we stick with the white lights."

Aboard a tram, Olde Town Trolley Tours offers excursions on a nightly basis. Passengers are treated to a nearly 30-minute ride around town to behold the spectacle.

This story is included in the Florida on a Tankful Holiday Spectatular, airing Thanksgiving weekend.

  • Sunday, Nov. 29 at 4 p.m.

You'll probably end up hungry by the time the tour is over.

Throughout the duration of the tour, there are several tram stops. The most popular one, however, is when folks jump off and grab a cookie and some hot cider.

"I like it, and I'll go again," said one disembarking passenger. "Tonight maybe!"

The lighting ceremony on Nov. 21 starts as an 18-piece orchestra leads the countdown, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

In the meantime, the Holly Jolly Trolley begins service on Nov. 22. Trolley service continues through Jan. 3.
