A family of seven, homeless for several months, now has a roof over their head, food to eat and hope.

It’s thanks to a group of North Brevard County friends who do it all in the spirit of community.

"He had a job, worked it, car broke down, no transportation, no job, and no home. So we went from a hotel to tent," Christina Cortimila said.

For Christina, her husband Jason, and five kids ages 12, 11, 9, 5 and 4, their life quickly turned upside down.

After moving to Titusville for a job, with all the money they had, they found themselves homeless in a matter of days.

They found themselves living in a tent in the woods behind a Mims campground for two-and-a-half months.

Then one weekend, they came back “home” to find two visitors -- Sharon James and Doug Baker.

"We now know where all the homeless camps are," said James.

James and Baker are part of a local group that got together nine months ago. They began with five neighbors, serving four meals every Saturday to any Titusville-area homeless person they could find.

Since, the unnamed group has grown in membership, and 50 meals are handed out every weekend.

"Driving away after feeding them, I was convinced that something more needed to be done," said Baker.

But in this case, local charity organizations wouldn't take in this family as a whole. It would take weeks to get help from any of the charities that could take the family in together.

"There are agencies set up to do that, but it takes time," Bakers said.

With that sense of urgency, within a matter of days, the group found a way to take care of everything. The family had a place to live, jobs, food and more.

"This was done by a group of people who said now, we need it now," said James.

The experience gave Christina and her large family hope for the future, thanks to some caring people who thought of them.

"They have been heaven sent from God above, I really believe that," she said.

The group is sticking with the family for at least the next two years to give them life-coaching skills to help their finances and more.
