A dog is home safe after he fell into a canal early Thursday morning and was rescued by Brevard County deputies.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office said around 6 a.m. Sgt Jason Knepp and deputies Lee Roth, Megan Lane and Tim Liston responded to a call of a distressed dog in a canal. When they arrived, they found a 170-pound, blind Bull Mastiff about 10 feet offshore.

The sheriff’s office said Roth immediately jumped into the canal and was able to get the dog safely to shore. The dog was in good spirits and is resting peacefully at home with his owners, deputies said.

Sheriff Wayne Ivey released the following statement on the BCSO Facebook page:

As a Sheriff, I could not be more proud of our members as this is another perfect example of the great work they do to help protect our community. Please join me in thanking Deputy Roth, Sgt. Knepp, Deputy Lane, and Deputy Liston for rescuing the dog and for helping return him home safely!!
