Thousands of bicyclists are expected on the roads in Lake County this weekend.

The group Bike Florida is in Clermont for the third annual Share the Road Celebration of Cycling to talk about bicycle and pedestrian safety.

The organization says Florida is one of the most dangerous states for bicyclists and pedestrians.

"When you lose a friend or a loved one it really takes safety to a different level, it becomes personal,” said Diane Travis, a Clermont city councilor.

Travis attended the two-day forum that featured policy-makers and advocates.

In 2010, Travis lost her fiancé, Harry Nickell, when he was killed on his bike by a motorist. Nickell was on his way to the “Horrible Hundred,” an annual ride in Clermont.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 48,000 injuries and 743 cyclist deaths occurred during motor vehicle traffic crashes in the U.S. in 2013. About 133 of those fatalities occurred in Florida.

Bike Florida is also partnering with the organizers of ‘the 36th annual Horrible Hundred,’ set to start at Waterfront Park in Clermont on Saturday and Sunday.
