A man worker suffered severe leg injuries after he fell off a barge late Tuesday night at Port Canaveral, officials said.

The incident happened around 10 p.m.

The U.S. Coast Guard said a crewmember on board the Paula Lee dredge barge went overboard in the middle of the port's channel.

A Brevard County spokesperson said the man struck a propeller and required "bi-lateral double amputation below the knee."

Holmes Regional Medical Center's medical helicopter airlifted the worker to the hospital. His current condition is unknown.

Crews typically work at night to dredge the port's channel when cruise ship and other boat activity is minimal.

The Coast Guard said it is still trying to determine whether the fall was accidental or intentional.
