Eight people suffered minor injuries after a SunRail train and a dump truck collided Thursday morning in Winter Park, officials said.

The 7:30 a.m. southbound train out of DeBary sideswiped a dump truck that was parked near the tracks behind a business, according to Steve Olson, a spokesman with the Florida Department of Transportation.

This was the first incident in which passengers on board a SunRail train were injured, Olson said.

Seven people on the train were injured. The driver of the dump truck also suffered injuries. All eight were taken to area hospitals for minor injuries, officials said.

A dump truck operator was working behind a business when he realized he parked the truck too close to the tracks. As the SunRail was coming up, he tried to get inside the dump truck to move it, but it was too late.

As the driver was trying to move the dump truck, the SunRail train sideswiped the truck around 8:15 a.m. The train was running less than 30 mph because it just left a station, Olson said.

Winter Park police said the driver of the dump truck likely won't be charged with a traffic incident, but he will likely face a civil infraction.

Olson said SunRail will seek damages from the dump truck company, Sanford-based TR Trucking & Bobcat Service, because the front cab was damaged.

There were 150 passengers on the train at the time of the collision, officials said.
