Police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found Tuesday afternoon in a canal in Melbourne.

The Melbourne Police Department said it received a call just before 5 p.m. from a passeby of a possible crash involving a motorbike along the canal line near the intersection of Paradise Boulevard and Mockingbird Lane.

When officers arrived on scene, they found a man dead and a motorbike in the water.

The passerby called 911 and described what she thought might have happened.

911 Caller: "It looks like he was riding and probably didn't realize there was a big ditch right there. And probably went right into the ditch and got knocked out or something."

Police have not released the name of the man and are working to determine how he died.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS (8477).
