A U-turn can be a quick and easy way to change directions, but the maneuver can get dicey.

David, from Orlando, writes in this week:

Who has the right-of-way at an intersection: a driver making a U-turn, or the driver make a right turn?

As it turns out, as long as you have a green light turning left, the drivers making the U-turn have the right-of-way over the drivers making a right turn on red.

As you make a U-turn, you should stay as close to staying in your lane as possible, as opposed to cutting across lanes. Sometimes, however, that may be impossible. That makes it even more important for the traffic turning right on red to yield.

If you receive a failure to yield citation without causing an accident or injury to another person, that typically results in a $164 fine. If an accident or injury happens, the fines and penalties will be much higher and a person will most likely be charged with reckless driving or cited for careless driving and failure to yield.

In addition to fines, a failure-to-yield citation can lead to license suspension and will add three points to a person's driver's license. That causes an insurance increase, as well.
