It's a bike trip geared toward helping those who serve our country, sometimes spending months at a time away from their loved ones in the most dangerous places across the globe.

Mile by mile, this group of bicycle riders gets closer to its goal: 586 miles in just six days, from the northern suburbs of Atlanta to the Fort Pierce-based Navy SEAL Museum.

On Monday, just a day and a half from their final destination, they rolled down U.S. 1 through Brevard County on a two-stop clip. At the lead was Christian Fitzgerald, whose close friend is a U.S. Navy SEAL.

A few years ago, he toured the Navy base in San Diego.

"There was a conference room, very nondescript, there were pictures all over the wall. There was a long pause, and he said, 'These are all the guys killed since the war on terror started,'" Fitzgerald said.

Fitzgerald said he knew he had to do something to help, and Pedal for Patriots was born.

Now in its third year, the bicyclists in Pedal for Patriots ride nearly 600 miles to raise funds to help the Navy SEAL Foundation, which provides support for SEALs and their families.

Brad Knops, a Navy veteran whose daughter is also enlisted, said the effort of a few days on the road doesn't compare to what those who serve go through in the most dangerous situations around the world.

"We are agonizing for just a couple days, but those guys are gone for over 270 days a year," said Knops.

The bicyclists said they have had all kinds of support along the way.

"Great response, people honking their horns. Actually, this year, we've gotten three donations, with people coming up, 'Here's some money; please give it to the Navy SEAL Foundation,'" Fitzgerald said.

The group has raised more than $20,000 this year. If you'd like to help, visit Pedal for Patriots at the following websites:
