Lake County school officials are trying to find all the students who may have had contact with a rabid bat at South Lake High School in Groveland.

The bat was found Monday near the gym by a student who brought it inside. The bat had a broken wing.

Senior Taylor Gibbs says his friend found the animal, and then Gibbs took it home.

"She's like, ‘I don't know what I'm going to do with the bat, I can't take it home with me,’ so I say let me call my girlfriend, I'm going to have her bring an old Tupperware container and I'll take it home with me," said Gibbs.

Gibbs also named the bat Barbara, after Barbara Gordon.

CDC officials were called to recover the bat. On Wednesday night, school officials got the confirmation that the bat had rabies.

"Most of the teachers explained they could not bring the bat into the classroom so most of the exposure that the students had was outside of the classroom," said South Lake High School Principal Rob McCue.

McCue says they know of at least 15 students that had contact with the bat and that no student has reported they were either bit or injured.

Lake County Health officials are urging only those students who had direct contact with the bat to get rabies shots.

"Anyone who did not touch the bat is not at risk," says McCue.

Officials say the bat has been euthanized.
