A 12-year-old boy is waking up in his own home Thursday morning, the first time since a vehicle hit him a week ago in Brevard County.

The investigation continues into who was driving the vehicle, which sped off after striking him on New Year’s Eve night.

Thomas Gregory was able to leave Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children Tuesday night.

The boy was thrown several feet and suffered broken bones in both legs after he was hit while playing in front of his home off Bahama Boulevard in Cocoa Beach.

He’ll remain in a wheelchair for months and will be homeschooled in the meantime.

“We’re just elated to have him home and all of us to be together as a family,” said Thomas’ mother, Amy Gregory, “and I think his spirits will be brighter at home with his friends and his family and his comforts.”

An anonymous tip led investigators to this dark colored SUV with front-end damage in Cocoa.

Police say the owner of the vehicle has been cooperating with police, but they still are trying to figure out who was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash.

“Somebody knows, the person that did this knows, and somebody else probably knows that person. It may even be somebody on this street and so we’re just hopeful people would be humane and come forward and get this person off the street,” said Amy Gregory.

Cocoa Beach has rallied behind Thomas and his family.

As they drove back home from the hospital, they could read signs at local businesses and churches with messages like “Get well soon Thomas.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Cocoa Beach Police Department at (321) 868-3251.
