The woman who claimed she was a victim of a strong-arm robbery on the University of Central Florida campus earlier this week made up the story because she was scared to tell her parents she lost her wallet, police said Friday.

The investigation began after detectives responded around 7 p.m. Wednesday to the scene near parking lots B12 and B13, which are located near the UCF Water Tower.

Detectives made contact with a female victim who alleged that suspects pulled their car up next to her, implied they had a weapon and demanded she hand over her purse.

No evidence indicative of a robbery was found at the scene, and the woman didn’t have much information about what took place, police said.

"In retracing the victim's steps from that night, video evidence indicated inconsistencies in the woman's story," a UCF police report states.

Upon further questioning, the victim recanted her story. She said she was never robbed but made up the story because she was fearful of telling her parents that she lost her wallet on campus.

Police said the woman's wallet was recovered, but several items — including cash — were missing. That part of the incident remains under investigation, police said.

UCF police will file at-large charges against the woman with the State Attorney's Office for a false police report. She will also be issued a student affairs referral, which makes her subject to UCF's student conduct process.

UCF students, faculty and staff members were notified of the alleged robbery Wednesday night via a UCF alert text message and email.

"While we hate to cause any undue panic within our community, this incident is a reminder of the importance of always remaining vigilant about your safety," UCF Police Chief Richard Beary said in a statement. "We take any crime that's reported to us seriously, and our detectives are committed to conducting thorough investigations. They did their job well."
