The end of January isn't traditionally when you find Floridians making a splash in the Atlantic Ocean. That's unless you're covered in fur.

And that's exactly what's happening at Canova Beach, located in Indian Harbour Beach.

"It's our only pet-friendly beach in Brevard County," said Emma Richard, of Ocean Partners Hotels.

Located on nine acres at Canova Beach, Fluffy and Fido are welcome. Their owners are, too.

"He's not a big fan of the waves himself," Richard said. "He likes to run away from them, but he loves being out here on the beach."

Richard and her dog, Phineas, are regulars at Canova Beach. While the beach is small, it's a big draw, Richard said.

But you have to follow the rules, and that includes picking up after your dog and keeping your pet on a leash.

Beach access and parking are free. There are other amenities, too, such as a rinsing station.

People traveling with their pooches will find overnight accommodations nearby at an unlikely place.

The Hilton Rialto, in nearby Melbourne, welcomes pets in the lobby and on the back patio. Both dogs and cats get the royal treatment upstairs.

The Days Inn and Best Western, both in Cocoa Beach, are pet-friendly, as well.

"It brings a lot of folks over from the Orlando and Tampa area to come and stay for the weekend," said Richard, who works at the Best Western.

There are also dog-friendly diners near Canova Beach where people are able to eat with their pets.
