A new school is coming to an area of Orange County, and it's something that hasn't been seen before.

Orange County Public Schools on Saturday announced a first-of-its-kind school will be built in the Parramore neighborhood, near downtown Orlando.

School district officials and community partners will collaborate on the school that will address needs of preschool to middle school students all at one campus. The school will accommodate students from 3 years old up to eighth grade.

The unnamed school will be built in the southwest quadrant near the intersection of Parramore Avenue and Amelia Street.

The $41.3 million project is a collaboration between the school district, the Rosen Foundation, the University of Central Florida, Valencia College and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida.

Debra Ford leaves near Parramore, but her son, James, has to attend school across town. That makes things tough, she said.

"Medical emergencies and then the traffic to get through downtown to Howard Middle School is a little bit challenging at times," Ford said.

But for families in the Parramore neighborhood, things are about to change.

"It makes a huge difference because instead of being bussed miles away from home, Parramore kids will be able to walk and ride their bikes to school with their siblings and children from around the community," Orange County School Board Vice Chairwoman Kat Gordon said.

While the school design is in preliminary stages, the vision is to have a separate wing for the preschool and prekindergarten programs, dedicated office and activity space for the Boys & Girls Club, and outdoor space suitable for community events.

"If you can envision leaving school and then coming to a place right in their neighborhood, and being there and being taken care off — it will be open in the evening until 9 p.m. for our teens — we know we can make great things possible," said Gary Cain, president of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida.

It also means more opportunities.

"They will have more services at this school than at the school (my son) is attending now," said Jackie Johnson, a parent.

The school is expected to open in August 2017.
