Monday marks the 30th annual observation of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the United States.

First observed in 1986 after President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law three years earlier, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day has since been designated as a national day of service by President Bill Clinton in 1994.

The holiday falls on the third Monday in January, close to Dr. King's birthday. He was born on Jan. 15, 1929.
