A 24-year-old man suffered a shark bite to the foot in New Smyrna Beach on Sunday, officials said.

The incident happened late Sunday morning, officials said.

The victim, who is from Gulfport, was taken to the hospital in a personal vehicle, not an ambulance. He has since been released from the hospital.

The man, whose name hasn't been released, was surfing about 100 yards from the shore south of the New Smyrna Beach jetty when he suffered a bite to his left foot, according to Deputy Chief Scott Petersohn, of Volusia Beach Safety and Ocean Rescue.
