One person was killed and more than a dozen others were injured in a chain-reaction crash along northbound I-95 in Brevard County, causing the highway to shut down for more than 10 hours as crews worked to clean up more than 200 gallons of diesel that spilled onto the roadway.

A semi-truck traveling northbound on I-95 lost control around 6:40 p.m., near the State Road 46 exit ramp, in Mims. The semi hit the crash attenuator, blocking all northbound lanes and a portion of the State Road 46 exit ramp.

All traffic came to a stop, but a second semi-truck, also traveling northbound, didn't see traffic backed up and hit five vehicles in the left lane. That semi then rear-ended a third semi. Three more vehicles were hit, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The semi that didn't stop caught fire, killing the driver, troopers said.

Another vehicle also caught fire, but the female driver was able to escape.

Two people were transported to Parrish Hospital with minor injuries. Brevard County Fire Rescue officials said at least 15 other people were treated for injuries at the scene.

The three semi-trucks were carrying sugar, flowers and food.

The Department of Environmental Protection was called in after the diesel fuel was spilled onto the roadway and into a drainage canal.

The exit to State Road 46, from northbound I-95 was reopened Sunday night, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
