With slightly stronger winds out of the east-southeast this afternoon, the east coast sea breeze has been able to set a bit earlier and fire up a few showers and storms as it moves west. There will be a chance for storms the rest of the afternoon and into early this evening. Some of the storms could dump some heavy rain and have frequent lightning. Gusty wind cannot be ruled out either as storms track to the west between 10-15 miles per hour. Temperatures will remain around 90 degrees with heat index numbers near triple digits.

Labor Day will continue to hold a 40 percent chance for storms inland and a 30 percent chance along the coast with highs around 90 degrees. Not much will change with this pattern as we head toward mid-week. A disturbance by the end of the week may generate higher rain chances for the end of the week into the weekend. Temperatures are also expected to go down a degree or two, but only because of the increase in cloud coverage as well as the increase chance for rain.

Speaking of rain, we are ending the month of August about normal for rain at the Orlando International Airport with near 7 inches recorded. For the year we are up over an inch with a total approaching 38 inches.

In the tropics, we are watching Invest 99 centered over the eastern Yucatan Peninsula. This tropical wave will be slow to develop over land, but has a high potential for development once it moves into the Gulf of Mexico on Monday. Whether this system develops or not, most models have it tracking west toward Mexico. Aside from a few tropical waves, the Atlantic is quiet.

Enjoy your holiday weekend!
