A 13-year-old girl is recovering after being bit by a shark on Sunday in New Smyrna Beach.

Beach Safety officials say the girl was swimming near the 2400 block of North Atlantic Avenue when she was bit on the calf causing a small puncture wound.

The girl was body surfing when the incident occurred, and was in what officials described as waist-deep water.

The shark was not seen by lifeguards, other swimmers in the area or beachgoers nearby.

According to Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue Public Information Officer Tamra Marris, this was the sixth shark bite this year.
