A SunRail train hits and kills a man, and right now, there are still many questions about what happened.

It happened around 10 p.m. Thursday near State Road 46 and West 1st Street, which is just northwest of the Sanford SunRail station.

Police said it appears the train was on its way back to the station when it struck the man – initially they said it was a freight train that struck him.

The body was reported by a SunRail conductor around 5 a.m. Friday.

Service resumed around 7:30 a.m. Friday but police are investigating why it wasn’t reported sooner and are wondering if it's possible the conductor driving the train didn’t know someone was struck or ran over.

It seems walking down the tracks is very common in the area – News 13 spotted another man doing the same thing this afternoon who told us he and his friends do it all the time.

For now, neither the Sanford Police Department or the Florida Department of Transportation are giving many details as to what happened. They say the investigation is ongoing.
