A man was arrested Friday, accused of shooting his girlfriend in Cocoa.

The investigation forced nearby schools to go on lockdown Friday morning.

Cocoa Police said Dennis Aviles shot his girlfriend, Tahnika Duppins on Johnson Street, near Bernard Street. The SWAT team was just around the corner serving a search warrant, when they got the call around 7:32 Friday morning, reporting shots fired inside a Johnson Street home.

When police got on scene, they discovered a woman with gunshot wounds. She was transported to Wuesthoff Hospital where she died from her injuries.

Police said at first Aviles told them that his girlfriend was shot by two men during a drug-related robbery. However, investigators said the statement did not match up with evidence from the crime scene.

Aviles is now charged with second-degree murder and with providing false information to officers, among other charges.
