Interested in helping police keep the community safe? Here's your chance to lend a hand to the Melbourne Police Department.

The agency in Brevard County is now accepting applications for its Volunteer Citizens Observance Patrol training program.

The goal is to help with public services like vacation home checks, traffic safety, special events, patrols and parking enforcement.

In order to make the cut, participants must complete a 40-hour training course including CPR, police procedures, basic law enforcement rules and how to communicate with the public.

The next training session begins Sept. 10 and runs through Nov. 5. It's held on Wednesday nights from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Applicants must have a valid Florida driver license, be a U.S. citizen or registered alien, be at least 21 years old, complete a background check and be willing to volunteer at least 12 hours a month.

The deadline to register is Sept. 3.

Applicants can register on the Melbourne Police Department's website or obtain an application from the Community Relations office located in the Melbourne Square Mall across from Macy's. For more information, call (321) 608-6336.
