Do you know the rules of the road now that hundreds of school buses are taking students back to class?

Vanessa Jones, a spokeswoman for AAA, said many drivers are still in "summer mode."

That means they are not anticipating the flashing lights of the yellow school buses and are unaware of their requirements to stop when they see the red flashing lights and the stop sign.

On a two-lane road or a multilane road with no median, drivers in both directions must stop when a school bus is flashing its red lights and has its stop sign visible.

If there is a median, however, drivers on the same side of the road as the school bus must stop, but drivers heading in the opposite direction on the other side of the median should proceed with caution.

But Jones said it's not only drivers that have to be careful.

"If we're not behind the wheel and we're actually walking on the sidewalk, just make sure we are on the sidewalk," Jones said. "Also, avoid distractions. Reduce distractions by taking (headphones) out of your ears so you (are) hearing your surroundings. If you were on a cell phone, it's just as dangerous to be walking as a pedestrian as it is to be driving behind the wheel of a car. So, put the phone away — at least while you're in route to your destination."

Jones said law enforcement is out to make sure drivers follow the rules.
