Kissimmee police say they used DNA from an aborted fetus to charge a man accused of having sex with a 14-year-old girl.

Police said 23-year-old Kevon Butler's girlfriend called the 14-year-old girl's father in October to tell him that his daughter was having sex with Butler.

Authorities said the two met on Facebook and began talking.

In November, the teen realized she was pregnant.

Police investigators traveled to Tampa, where she was getting an abortion. They took DNA from the aborted fetus and eventually tested it at a Florida Department of Law Enforcement laboratory.

They also got DNA from Butler.

The results were returned in June, and police said it proved Butler to be the unborn child’s father.

"We'll use anything at our disposal to make sure we can close a case, and in that instance, we had to use that specimen," said Kissimmee Police Department Spokesperson Stacie Miller.

Over the weekend, police tracked Butler down near Benita Street in Kissimmee.

Police said they found the convicted felon with a gun; he was promptly arrested.

The next day they tacked on other charges -- including the lewd and lascivious battery on a child between the ages of 12 and 15.

"He has been in and out of jail since he was 17 years old, so hopefully this will keep him in jail for quite some time," added Miller.

Police said the sex between Butler and teen was consensual, but her age makes it illegal.

Butler remains in the Osceola County Jail.
