A 24-year-old man was arrested and charged for having sex with a minor that he began talking to on the Internet, New Smyrna Beach police said.
The investigation revealed Devin Taylor Schmidtke began chatting over the Internet with a 13-year-old girl. After several months of communication, Schmidtke traveled more than two hours last week from Marion County to meet the child in Volusia County.
Schmidtke took the minor to a motel in New Smyrna Beach, where they engaged in sexual activity several times.
The young girl's family discovered inappropriate messages on her cell phone and notified police. Schmidtke was located and arrested by the Marion County Sheriff's Office after police obtained an arrest warrant.
He has been charged with having sex with a minor, traveling to entice a child, transmission of sexually explicit material to a child and use of a child to engage in sexual performance.
