After approving a sales tax increase a little more than two months ago, Seminole County residents will soon see a reduction in their school property tax.

The Seminole County School Board on Tuesday passed a plan to reduce the school property tax rate from 1.0 mills to .70 mills — a 30 percent reduction.

With 52 percent of the vote, Seminole County voters approved a countywide sales tax increase — from 6 percent to 7 percent — back in May. The increase, which will be in effect for 10 years, will provide Seminole County Public Schools with 25 percent of the funds to go toward infrastructure improvements.

School officials vowed to reduce the millage rate (property tax) if the sales tax increase was approved. The approval of the sales tax will provide the school district with $157 million during the 10-year period. Seminole County's sales tax increase will take effect Jan. 1, 2015, and will last for 10 years.

Property owners can expect to see the reduced tax rate on their November tax assessments.
