A massive manhunt for four suspected shooters in Lake and Sumter was called off at around 3:30 p.m. on Friday.

The search took place on State Road 50 right near the Lake and Sumter County line.

Detectives think the group could be responsible or at least related to a series of shootings the past 48 hours in the Webster area.

This manhunt went on now for more than 12 hours while Mascotte officers protected the perimeter along State Road 50.

This is a tremendous area law enforcement tried to keep locked down, some 15 square miles, but the bulk of the search is took place just to the west of the 300 swampy acres.

This all started early this morning in Sumter County after the second shooting call of the night in Webster.

Around 9 p.m., deputies said Kevin Smith was airlifted to Ocala Regional Medical Center after being shot on Northwest 4th Street.

Then around 1 a.m. Friday, deputies said multiple rounds were fired into a home on the 4300 block of County Road 758. No one was injured.

That's when a vehicle was spotted believed to be involved and a chase began ending here along the highway in Lake County.

The men ran into the wooded swampy area.

"We consider them as possibly armed and very dangerous so that's why we are throwing all the resources to get them located and in custody," said Lt. John Herrell.

At least nine canine teams were out in the woods right Friday.

All morning long, helicopters circling the area.

It started with 50 Lake and Sumter County deputies, Groveland and Mascotte Police Officers.

Dozens more have assisted with the search as the Florida Highway Patrol and Fish and Wildlife were on scene as well with their ATVs.

There were no evacuations but people are asked to be cautious and definitely alert authorities if you see any suspicious people on your property.
