Orlando Police Officer David Johnston has been indicted by an Orange County grand jury for his involvement in a February shooting in downtown Orlando.

An arrest warrant was issued on July 24, five months after a shooting incident occurred when Johnston allegedly discharged a firearm in public, and fired into an occupied conveyance.

Johnston surrendered himself at the Seminole County jail, and is allowed to post bond.

Officials with the Orlando Police Department have confirmed Johnston has been placed on paid alternative duty.

This is the result of a months long investigation on charges that Johnston, who’s been a part of the Orlando Police Department for almost two years, shot into a vehicle without justification.

The shooting happened February 24 in a parking garage on West Church Street in downtown Orlando, while Johnston and two other officers were attempting to arrest Derrick Lattimore.

Lattimore was accused of a domestic disturbance and making death threats before the attempted arrest. When officers spotted Lattimore downtown, they say he tried to run them over. Six shots were fired.

An internal investigation will happen once the criminal process is done.
