A 14-year-old boy was found dead Thursday night after Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission crews spent hours searching the waters of Lake Schimmerhorn in Lake County.

Officials say the teen was in a boat that capsized yesterday afternoon in the community of Astor.

Investigators say there were three teenagers in the boat, two of them were brothers.

After the boat capsized, the boys swam to shore, but only 17-year-old Eli Ladesic and 16-year-old Jarred Cook made it. Nathaniel Ladesic's body was found a couple hours later.

A nearby resident got a knock on the door from a man and that neighbor called 911 around 4:15 p.m. Thursday.

“I just came home from work, I just walked in the door and he was banging on the door and said they were fishing on the boat on the lake. It capsized and they can’t find the other gentleman’s 14-year-old brother,” the caller said.

They returned to the Lake Friday morning, searching for the boat and answers.

“We look at all these factors to see if it was overloaded or not and we just try to figure out why it sunk,” FWC investigator Mike Fischer said.

Once again using side sonar scanners, the dive team was able to recover the boat before noon.

They found the ten-foot jon boat didn’t have a motor, the teens say they simply were using a makeshift paddle made out of PVC pipe. The older model boat didn’t have foam cushioning built in under the seat or at the front end as required by law for newer boats.

“If it had flotation on it to keep it buoyed on the water that would have been a platform that people would have been able to hold on to until rescue arrives,” Fischer said.

Investigators said the boys weren’t wearing life jackets.

Friends of the family outside their Lake Schimmerhorn home said the family is grieving privately.
