A longtime Cocoa Beach resident known both for surfing, and for being an advocate for kidney disease awareness is being honored two years after he passed away.

Rick Salik spent his life battling kidney disease, and became a world class surfer despite his illness.

Now, the post office in Cocoa Beach will bear his name thanks to legislation sponsored by Congressman Bill Posey and just passed by the U.S. House of Representatives.

Rick organized surfing events to help those on dialysis with his twin brother Phil, who donated one of his kidneys to Rick.

Rick Salik became the first pro athlete to receive a transplant and return to his sport, where he became a champion and eventual Hall of Famer.

He passed away in 2012.
