Fleet Peeples Park will be Lake Baldwin Park once again.

The Winter Park City Commission unanimously approved a name change during the meeting today.

City leaders said they will take down the Fleet Peeples Park signs immediately and order new signs to be printed that will say Lake Baldwin Park. Those signs should be up by the end of the week.

This is a developing story. Check back for the latest.

While the park's name honors a well-known swimming instructor in the city, some women claim the name evokes painful, traumatic memories.

Fleet Peeples Sr. was a local icon. He was Rollins College's aquatics director and taught thousands of children how to swim.

“I knew Fleet, Fleet Peeples personally," said former Winter Park Mayor Gary Brewer. "He was a good man and did a lot of good work in the community, but allegations coming forward, I think the city really had no other choice but to make that change.”

According to the victims, Peeples would prey on small children at his swim classes, rewarding them with gumdrops.

Now, 21 years after Peeples' death, others are coming forward to tell their stories of Peeples' alleged sexual abuse.

One woman said she decided to come forward when she saw that his son and namesake, Fleet Peeples Jr., was arrested for dozens of child porn charges in January. Investigators said the child pornography in his possession looked old, taken some 30 to 50 years ago. That case is now in the hands of the State Attorney's Office.

“I knew that his son had been arrested on similar charges, but it was a shock to me to learn that it also went down to him as well," Brewer said. "I don’t think you can discount personal testimony from individuals that were affected by that.”

The investigation into Peeple’s son is still ongoing as he sits behind bars waiting for his day in court.

However, the state attorney’s office said allegations into Peeple’s Senior will be harder to prove since they reportedly happened decades ago and he has since passed away.

“I think it’s better to get it behind us now," said Winter Park resident Marjorie Thomas. "Get it changed and be done with it.”

And preserve the good memories at the park on Lake Baldwin where families and dogs can play.

If the name change is approved city leaders said they will take down the Fleet Peeples Park signs immediately and order new signs to be printed that will say Lake Baldwin Park. Those signs should be up by the end of the week.
