A mother accused of trying to kill her child is breaking her silence from behind bars. News 13 first reported about 18-year-old Brenna Winter’s arrest a couple of weeks ago after being caught on camera and admitting to trying to smother her baby at Nemours Children’s Hospital in Lake Nona.

Now she’s telling her side of the story to News 13.

It should come as no surprise that Winter is now going back on everything she told investigators at the time. She said they weren’t listening to her and at that point she was willing to say anything to end the questioning.

For the past few weeks she has been behind bars at the Orange County Jail and at our request, agreed to do an interview to set the record straight.

She said she took her 4-month-old daughter, Olivia, to the hospital because she was vomiting blood, but after checking Olivia, doctors were skeptical of her injuries.

News 13: Why was she having a problem breathing at the hospital?

Winter: Because she had a really bad stuffy nose.

News 13: Were you holding her too tight?

Winter: No.

The police report said a hospital worker advised Winter that she was holding the baby too tight and causing her heart rate to drop.

Two alarms went off while Olivia was at the hospital, both times were when Winter was seen touching her.

News 13: What happened when the alarms went off in the hospital and you were standing over Olivia’s crib? What were you doing?

Winter: Trying to get her to breathe and see what was going on.

News 13: How were you trying to help her breathe?

Winter: By trying to keep her airways open.

That’s when the Department of Children and Families was called.

Winter: They told me that this is an investigation now, and that I’m not allowed to be left alone with her.

After some police questioning, Winter admitted to trying to gain attention by covering her baby’s mouth with her hand, causing her face to turn blue.

Winter: At that point I was willing to tell her anything to get out of it.

News 13: Has your mental stability been questioned?

Winter: Yes.

News 13: And what have they said?

Winter: They just said I’m out of control when I’m not on my meds.

Winter said she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder when she was 16 years old. Just a year before she got pregnant.

News 13: Were you taking your medications when Olivia was in the hospital?

Winter: No, I couldn’t.

News 13: Why was that?

Winter: Because I was breastfeeding her at the time.

She said she is now back on her medications and results from a mental stability test are pending.

News 13: Do you think you’ll ever see Olivia again?

Winter: I don’t know.

Winter said she has had no contact with her family, and only knows that her 4-month-old daughter is now in foster care.

Meanwhile, Winter is facing several charges including attempted first degree murder and aggravated child abuse.
