Brevard County Commissioners will get their first say on the proposed budget for next year Thursday.

For the most part, there are no frills in the $1 billion budget, which is just slightly less than the current budget.

The proposed budget doesn’t call for any layoffs and cuts the property tax rate.

However, it also means no pay raises for county employees, nor money for road projects.

Drivers said the county needs to take care of the roads as plenty of potholes have formed after the recent deluge of rain.

Projects on Babcock Road, Evans Road and Clear Lake Road will have to sit on the back-burner once again, according to the Public Works Department.

Commissioner Andy Anderson said he’s going to ask other commissioners for more money for road projects at their workshop Thursday.

“We’re providing that service not only for our residents and congestion, but it’s an economic development issue too," Anderson said. "Nobody wants to relocate their company if there’s a failing infrastructure.”

The Sheriff’s Office will receive a $10 million boost in funding under the proposal, since the sheriff will be taking over Animal Services in October.

County leaders said more than $15 million in the budget is going to mandated expenditures, such as Medicaid and the courts.

The county commission will have the final say on the budget.

Two public meetings will also take place before the budget is adopted, which must occur by Oct. 1.

Commissioners will meet at 1 p.m. at the Brevard County Government Center, 2725 Judge Fran Jamieson Way.
