A Volusia County man was arrested Monday after he shot his stepson in the chest multiple times, deputies said.

John Douglas, 68, and his stepson, Willie Patterson, 36, got into a verbal argument at their DeLand home around 11:22 p.m. Sunday.

That's when Douglas called Patterson's mom, Doris Douglas, and said "she should return home and get her son before I kill him," according to a Sheriff's Office report.

Doris Douglas told deputies she then heard gunshots through the telephone and heard her son say "I can't believe you shot me in the chest" in the background, according to the incident report.

Doris Douglas then returned to her home off Stewart Road to find her son with multiple gunshot wounds.

Patterson was taken to Florida Hospital Fish Memorial, in Orange City. He was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

During a conversation with the Sheriff's Office operator, John Douglas stated that the firearm he used to shoot Patterson with was a .22-caliber handgun loaded with birdshot ammunition.

Douglas was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail on an attempted first-degree murder with a firearm charge. He's being held on no bond, according to jail records.
