You’re right! On average, tropical storms move at a speed of around 12 mph. A storm's forward speed is largely dependent on its latitude.
Once a storm moves north of the 35-degree latitude mark (near the middle of the coast of North Carolina), winds generally accelerate the storms speed more quickly.
