You’re right! Whenever a tropical system is active but does not pose a threat to land, the National Hurricane Center sends out regular advisories every 6 hours, usually at 5 a.m., 11 a.m., 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. Eastern Time.

When a storm does pose a threat to land, the advisories are usually every 3 hours, or even more frequent, depending on how close to the U.S. the storm is.
