You’re right! The air around a tropical system rotates counterclockwise north of the Equator, and clockwise south of the Equator. This is due to the Coriolis effect, a deflecting force set up by the rotation of the Earth.

The Coriolis force affects large tropical storms, but has little to no impact on small areas like toilets and sinks, despite what you might have heard otherwise.
