An Ormond Beach police officer shot and killed a pit bull Monday morning after the dog attacked another officer and bit him on his neck.

Officers responded to a home off Byron Ellinor Drive around 6:38 a.m. in reference to a pit bull that mauled a cat. The owner of the dog, June Davisworth, was in the backyard attempting to rescue the cat from the pit bull's mouth, according to a police report.

Officers who arrived on scene could hear Davisworth yelling for help. When the pit bull saw the officer, it immediately broke free from its owner and attacked the officer, police said.

The officer was bitten on the back of his neck and on his forearm. Another officer arrived and saw the pit bull attacking the officer. The second officer shot and killed the dog.

The police officer who was attacked required medical treatment, police said.

Further investigation revealed that the same dog was being quarantined for attacking and killing three other dogs on April 24. The owner of the three dogs also suffered bite wounds during that attack.

According to a quarantine order, the pit bull was required to be on a leash while outside, but it wasn't during the attack.
