A high-speed, single-vehicle crash resulted in the death of the sole occupant around midnight in Daytona Beach Shores.

A public safety officer was near the 2900 block of South Atlantic Avenue when he heard a loud explosion.

Upon investigation, he discovered a crashed vehicle on fire in front of Oceans 8 condominiums.

Firefighters responded to the scene and quickly extinguished the fire.

An initial investigation revealed that the vehicle, a silver Toyota hatchback, was traveling southbound on South Atlantic Avenue at speeds of up to 110 mph when it crossed into the northbound lanes and struck a curb, sending it airborne.

While airborne, the vehicle struck a light pole at 13 feet in the air and exploded. The fire had fully engulfed the vehicle prior to the officers arrival.

The victim has not been identified.

South Atlantic Avenue was shut down during the investigation and re-opened around 6:30 a.m.
