A tourist is recovering in the hospital after being bitten on the foot by a shark in Cocoa Beach Tuesday afternoon.

It happened around 3:30 p.m. in Shepard Park.

Brevard Ocean Rescue said the 42-year-old man was in the water when lifeguards noticed something was going on.

The man was bleeding as he came out of the water. Lifeguards were able to bandage him up and get him to a waiting ambulance and onto Cape Canaveral Hospital.

The water was cleared and a double red flag flew for about half an hour. That's the protocol after a shark encounter.

Lifeguards believe the shark was about three to four feet in length.
