Merritt Island High School was placed on a "secure in place" lockdown for the remainder of the day Thursday while administrators investigate a "disruption" to school activity.

Brevard County school officials said administrators are investigating what they called "social media incidents that have caused disruptions to the school day."

According to a spokesman for Brevard Public Schools, a message was going around social media claiming if there were eight fights at the school within a week, the school would have to close for one week. The school district said that is not an actual policy.

The school district said the lockdown was a precautionary action only. Students remained in the classes and locations they were in when the lockdown began until school was dismissed at 3:30 p.m.

Merritt Island High School is closed Friday for a districtwide student and teacher holiday.
