Service has been restored in Brevard County after a water main break, but now customers are forced to boil their water.

A boil water alert was issued for more than 10,000 customers Tuesday.

It started around 3 p.m. when a car hit a fire hydrant. The repair work caused a water line to become dislodged at a major water main, according to Melbourne Public Works officials.

The break also caused low water pressure in most of Melbourne's beachside area. The notice affects customers from Pineda Causeway to East Eau Gallie Boulevard.

As a precaution, Melbourne Public Works officials advise all water used for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth or washing dishes be boiled. A rolling boil notice of one minute is sufficient. Bottled water can be used as an alternative.
