A 15-year-old is recovering after burning his fingers on blasting caps outside a Seminole County school.

Lake Mary police were called out to Lake Mary Preparatory School , located at 650 Rantoul Lane, Tuesday afternoon.

A student told police he unknowingly had two blasting caps inside his backpack. When he reached in to retrieve something, one of the caps went off, burning his fingers.

As a precaution, police called in the Seminole County Sheriff's Office explosive ordinance disposal team. A bomb sniffing dog searched the school. The other device was rendered safe.

The teen was treated at the scene.

Police said the student is from an Asian country and blasting caps are considered toys in his culture.

A secondary location near Greenwood Boulevard and Sand Pond Road was also searched because it's where international students from the school are housed.

Nothing was found in that search.
