The biggest local-level election in Brevard County this year could be one without any candidates.

A big volunteer effort started Monday night at Viera High School to get voters to approve a half-cent sales tax on the November ballot.

The last time the measure failed, three Brevard County schools closed for good.

Suna Clinchard went to Sea Park Elementary School in Satellite Beach when she was a kid. Now, one of her sons is in kindergarten, and she hopes her younger son, Curren, will attend the same school in a couple of years.

"It's a great community school with awesome teachers and a lot of parent involvement," said Clinchard. "We hope that it will stay open. We'd hate for our community to be broken up and have to be shipped to Cocoa Beach to go to school."

Sea Park Elementary was one of four schools considered for closure last year after voters rejected a half-cent sales tax in 2012. Only Sea Park was spared.

Now, with a similar measure on this year's ballot, Sea Park parents and educators worry their luck may run out if it fails.

But this year, unlike in 2012, a big campaign effort is being organized to push for passage of the half-cent sale tax. More 100 volunteers are joining Brevard Save Our Students, a nonprofit group hoping to raise at least $75,000 to campaign for the sales tax.

"If we don't get the half-cent tax, then we're going to be short by $8 million, which means we'll have to go back and take a look at the areas we have to reduce and take expenses from, which will include probably some of the music programs, sports, potentially some schools," said Adrian Laffittee, chairwoman of Brevard Save Our Students. "We want to avoid all that."

Parents such as Lisa Venanzi are getting involved with the group, because they said their children's education is at risk.

"The music and arts programs are at stake, just the very structures some of the playgrounds need to be replaced or they have to shut them down," Venanzi said.

Brevard Public Schools has already targeted areas for cuts in the 2015–16 school year if the sales tax fails. It includes closing four elementary or middle schools, as well as outsourcing custodial services, requiring all employees take a furlough day, and even making parents pay for students involved in sports.

The vote doesn't happen until November, but the group plans to be out campaigning for the tax hike in the coming weeks.
